French Soldier Killed in Erbil Attack, First Fatality in Middle East Conflict
A French soldier has been killed in an attack in Erbil, located in Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region. This incident marks the first French military fatality in the ongoing Middle East conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the death on social media platform X, identifying the soldier as Chief Warrant Officer Arnaud Frion of the 7th Battalion of Chasseurs Alpins from Varces. Macron stated that Frion "died for France" and expressed the nation's "affection and solidarity" to his family and fellow soldiers.
Macron also reported that several other French soldiers sustained injuries in the same attack. He described the incident as "unacceptable."
Macron emphasized that the presence of French forces in Iraq is strictly for counter-terrorism efforts against Daesh (Islamic State) since 2015. He added that the war in Iran does not justify such attacks.
The French army had previously announced that six French soldiers, who were training with Iraqi partners, were wounded and subsequently transported to a medical facility following a drone attack in the region.
