Chinese Backpackers Discovered Deceased in Queensland Floodwaters

Qiu Qingwei, 26, and Guo Yuchen, 23, both Chinese backpackers, were discovered deceased in floodwaters near Kilkivan, Queensland. The individuals had met in Australia months earlier and were traveling to the North Burnett region for work on a citrus farm after intending to collect their working holiday visas.

The pair went missing on Sunday, leading to concern when friends lost contact. Xie Yongqi, a friend of Qiu Qingwei, stated he received a message about rain an hour before communication ceased.

Search and Tragic Discovery

A search and rescue operation, involving police, SES volunteers, and helicopter crews, was initiated between Kilkivan and Mundubbera.

On Wednesday, Qiu Qingwei's silver Subaru Forester was found in floodwater, having been washed off a road in Kilkivan, located approximately three hours north-west of Brisbane. Both bodies were located within the vehicle.

Community Response and Support

Friends have described Qiu Qingwei as having a "positive and optimistic" attitude.

Efforts are currently underway by friends to fundraise to support both families in traveling to Queensland, with the Chinese Consulate General in Brisbane involved in discussions regarding humanitarian passports.
