18-Year-Old Held Without Bail in Danvers Fatal Stabbing

Anthony DeMayo, an 18-year-old, has been ordered held without bail following his arraignment in Salem District Court on charges of murder and home invasion. The charges stem from the fatal stabbing of 69-year-old Janet Swallow in her Danvers, Massachusetts, home. Police located Ms. Swallow deceased in her bedroom.

Arrest and Initial Investigation

DeMayo was arrested after Lynn Police responded to a 911 call regarding a man with a knife acting erratically on Standish Road. Officers observed blood on the knife and noted DeMayo's behavior.

Court documents indicate DeMayo confessed to killing a woman in Danvers the previous night.

Due to his mental state, DeMayo was initially transported to Salem Hospital. Investigators then searched his home in Lynn, with evidence leading them to Ms. Swallow's residence in Danvers.

Alleged Crime Details

According to court filings, DeMayo informed investigators that he had planned the act for an extended period, intending to kill someone. He allegedly drove through surrounding communities before selecting a home in Danvers.

He reportedly gained entry by climbing through a window, located Ms. Swallow sleeping, and proceeded to stab her in the neck. After the act, he reportedly exited the home and drove back to Lynn.

Authorities stated that the crime was random, with no known connection between DeMayo and the victim or her home.

Mental State and Legal Proceedings

A psychologist informed the court that she had concerns about DeMayo's rational understanding.

He has been committed to Bridgewater State Hospital for a 20-day psychiatric evaluation.

His next court appearance is scheduled for April 1.

School Responds

Bishop Fenwick High School, where DeMayo is a senior, released a statement confirming their full cooperation with law enforcement. The school noted the incident occurred off-campus, did not involve other school members, and presented no threat to the school community. Counselors were made available to students and staff.
