Federal Charges Filed in ODU Shooting Gun Sale
Arrest and Charges
Kenya Micchell Chapman has been arrested and faces federal charges related to the sale of a firearm used in a fatal shooting at Old Dominion University (ODU). Chapman is charged with making false statements during a firearm purchase and dealing firearms without a license.
Shooting Incident Details
The firearm was reportedly used by Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a convicted ISIS supporter, during an ROTC class at ODU. Jalloh allegedly opened fire, resulting in the death of instructor Brandon Shah and injuries to two other individuals.
Witnesses reported Jalloh asking if it was an "ROTC event" twice before firing and shouting "Allahu Akbar." ROTC members present subdued Jalloh, who died before law enforcement arrived.
Mohamed Bailor Jalloh was legally barred from owning a gun due to his prior conviction.
Investigation and Gun Trace
Investigators were unable to immediately trace the Glock pistol used by Jalloh due to a partially obliterated serial number. However, Jalloh's phone, found near his body, indicated frequent contact with Chapman in the week preceding the shooting.
Chapman had a history with law enforcement, having been previously investigated for straw-purchasing firearms and receiving a warning letter from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Chapman's Confession
During a search of his home, Chapman initially claimed to have found the gun "in the woods."
Chapman later admitted to stealing the weapon approximately one year ago and selling it to Jalloh for $100 within the past week.
Chapman stated he was unaware of Jalloh's felon status and that Jalloh claimed he needed the gun for protection as a delivery driver.
