Smartphone App Shows Promise in Treating Premature Ejaculation
A smartphone application designed to address psychological factors contributing to premature ejaculation has shown promise in improving sexual function and delaying ejaculation, according to researchers. Data from the CLIMACS study was presented at the European Association of Urology Annual Congress (EAU26), highlighting the potential of digital therapeutics.
The Melonga App®: A New Therapeutic Approach
The app, named Melonga App®, teaches men therapeutic techniques, tips, and exercises developed by urologists and psychologists. It also provides evidence-based information on the condition.
The guided training helps users manage arousal and improve ejaculation control, incorporating methods such as mindfulness, arousal awareness exercises, cognitive behavioral therapy, and physical techniques like the start-stop method.
Understanding Premature Ejaculation
Premature ejaculation is a condition where men typically ejaculate sooner than desired, often within 60 seconds of penetration. It affects up to 30% of men but is highly stigmatized, with only 9% seeking medical help. The causes are complex, involving relationship issues and psychological factors like anxiety, stress, and depression. Existing treatments, such as pills or creams, generally only manage symptoms.
CLIMACS Study Reveals Significant Improvements
The German-based CLIMACS study evaluated the Melonga App® with 80 men over a 12-week period. Participants measured their ejaculation time using a stopwatch and completed health questionnaires. A control group received no support for 12 weeks before being offered app access. Sixty-six patients completed the questionnaires.
Key Findings from the CLIMACS Study
The results for app users demonstrated substantial improvements:
- Ejaculation time doubled on average, increasing by 64 seconds (from 61 seconds to 125 seconds). In contrast, the control group showed an average increase of only 0.5 seconds.
- Users reported significant improvements in ejaculation control during sex, reduced worry related to ejaculation, and a lessened impact on their relationships.
- The app demonstrated significant improvement in sexuality-related quality of life measures, including enjoyment and confidence.
- After 12 weeks, 22% of app users self-reported that they were no longer experiencing premature ejaculation.
Expert Perspectives
Dr. Christer Groeben, lead researcher, stated that the app offers an at-home self-help tool that can support men in improving control and achieving a satisfying sex life without compromising spontaneity. He noted that it addresses the shame associated with the condition and offers a more comprehensive approach than symptom-focused therapies.
Dr. Giorgio Russo, Chair of the EAU Office of Young Academic Urologists, remarked that the app provides an accessible, evidence-based resource developed by urologists and psychologists. He highlighted the significant finding that nearly a quarter of patients were treated without medication and suggested further research into partner satisfaction.
Study Status and Availability
Final, non-peer-reviewed results of the CLIMACS study are anticipated to be published later in the year. The Melonga App® is currently available in Ireland, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, and Belgium.
