Senator McKim's Criticism
Federal Greens senator Nick McKim has criticized the Labor Party's approach to the conflict in Iran, specifically concerning Australia's defense involvement and immigration policy.
Concerns Regarding Iran Conflict and Casualties
During a bills committee meeting on Friday, Senator McKim stated his concerns about Australia's defense posture. He asserted that missiles deployed by Australia, as part of Labor's policy, would affect both military installations and the civilian population in Iran. McKim further stated that innocent individuals, including schoolchildren, were being killed and displaced from their homes as a consequence of such actions.
Immigration Policy Under Scrutiny
Senator McKim also addressed the Labor government's policy of restricting immigration for Iranians seeking to flee the country. He argued that these individuals might require protection not only from internal issues within Iran but also from the military actions Australia is involved in.
Asylum Decision and Legislative Actions Questioned
A particular point of contention for Senator McKim was Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke's decision to grant asylum to members of the Iranian Women’s Football Team. McKim questioned the timing of this action, noting that it occurred on the same day the government introduced legislation designed to restrict other Iranian immigrants.
He characterized this as a cynical leveraging of opportunity for media attention while simultaneously closing immigration pathways for other Iranians in similar circumstances.
