U.S. Intensifies Economic Pressure on Cuba's Oil Supply
The United States has recently implemented measures aimed at blocking Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba. Historically, these shipments supplied approximately half of Cuba's total energy requirements, making this a significant blow to the island's energy security.
In addition to these direct blocking efforts, the U.S. has issued stern warnings. Any nation found selling oil to Cuba now faces the potential imposition of tariffs from the United States. This action expands the scope of U.S. pressure, seeking to deter alternative suppliers from stepping in.
These measures represent an escalation of economic sanctions and are layered on top of a pre-existing six-decade trade embargo maintained by the U.S. against the island nation.
