Newcastle Knights Injury Update: Ponga, Brown, and Others Sidelined

The Newcastle Knights have released comprehensive updates regarding injuries to key players, including captain Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown. These announcements detail varying recovery timelines for a number of squad members.

Captain Kalyn Ponga is set for an estimated 6 to 8 weeks on the sidelines due to a high-grade hamstring strain, while Dylan Brown faces a four-week absence following an MCL strain.

Key Player Injuries

Kalyn Ponga

Captain Kalyn Ponga sustained a high-grade hamstring strain during a recent game. He spent 28 minutes on the field before clutching his right hamstring after scoring a try. Ponga initially attempted to continue playing following an assessment but re-aggravated the injury after a few more plays, prompting his replacement by Fletcher Hunt.

Before his exit, Ponga had recorded 88 metres, four tackle busts, a line break, and a try. He has since commenced a structured rehabilitation program.

Ponga is expected to return to play in 6 to 8 weeks, with his recovery contingent on rehabilitation progress.

Dylan Brown

Dylan Brown incurred a Grade 2 MCL strain to his knee. This injury occurred approximately eight minutes after Ponga's incident. Brown played until half-time before being ruled out of the remainder of the game.

He is expected to be sidelined for approximately four weeks and has immediately commenced a structured rehabilitation program.

Additional Player Updates

Brodie Jones

Brodie Jones underwent foot surgery last week. He has now begun his rehabilitation, with an anticipated return to play in approximately eight weeks.

Fletcher Sharpe

Fletcher Sharpe sustained a PCL injury during the Round 1 victory. Sharpe is making good progress in his recovery and is currently on track to return for Round 3. The Knights are scheduled to host the NZ Warriors in Round 3.

These detailed injury updates were released following the Knights' NRL Round 2 victory over the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles.

The combined absences of Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown represent an estimated $2.7 million in salary cap value for the Newcastle Knights.
