R.E.M. Tribute Tour Features All-Star Lineup and Special Guests
Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy have been touring with an R.E.M. tribute group, playing selections from the band's extensive song catalog. The ensemble includes notable musicians such as Wilco bassist John Stirratt and Mountain Goats drummer Jon Wurster.
The project originated in 2023 with a one-off show covering R.E.M.'s 1983 debut album, Murmur. Due to strong audience demand, it quickly expanded into a full tour. Subsequent tours have chronologically covered Fables of the Reconstruction and Lifes Rich Pageant.
The current tour features over 30 songs each night, emphasizing deep cuts and obscure tracks.
Guest Appearances by R.E.M. Members
During the tour, several original R.E.M. members have made memorable guest appearances:
- Michael Stipe: Joined the band onstage in Brooklyn to perform "These Days" and "The Great Beyond."
He described hearing his songs played by the group as a "surreal" experience.
- Mike Mills: Initially attended a Murmur show and later joined the band onstage.
- Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Bill Berry, and Michael Stipe: All four original R.E.M. members performed together spontaneously at a show in Athens, Georgia, playing "Pretty Persuasion."
Peter Buck noted that they performed for free despite prior offers of millions for a reunion.
Band's Approach and Audience Reaction
Shannon, an Oscar and Tony-nominated actor, sings alongside Narducy. Shannon expressed that he is actively learning about R.E.M.'s music and Michael Stipe's vocal range during the performances. Narducy highlighted Shannon's unique vocal interpretation and stage presentation of the songs.
The tribute band's focus on deep cuts and B-sides resonates strongly with dedicated R.E.M. fans. They noted that the Lifes Rich Pageant tour saw an increase in energy due to the album's distinct sound shift.
Shannon mentioned the joy of introducing lesser-known R.E.M. songs to fans who consider themselves fervent followers of the band.
Narducy emphasized the unique and joyful nature of the project and the strong connection they've forged with the audience.
Future Plans
Shannon and Narducy plan to continue their chronological album tour. Document (1987) is a strong consideration for the next album to perform. They have also discussed playing specific songs from other albums, including Monster tracks like "Crush With Eyeliner" and "Star 69."
Stipe's Insights
Michael Stipe has shared various insights regarding the songs. These include the connection between the characters in "The Lifting" and "Daysleeper," and his observations on the political themes beginning to emerge in R.E.M.'s work on Lifes Rich Pageant.
