Amy Madigan Wins Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 'Weapons'
Amy Madigan received the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the film 'Weapons' at the 98th Academy Awards. Madigan prevailed over nominees Elle Fanning ('Sentimental Value'), Wunmi Mosaku ('Sinners'), and Teyana Taylor ('One Battle After Another').
Her victory established a new record for the longest interval between nominations and a win, as her previous nomination in the same category was 40 years prior, in 1986, for 'Twice in a Lifetime'.
A Memorable Acceptance Speech
In her acceptance speech, Madigan addressed being asked about the difference between her two nominations by stating:
"What’s different is I got this little gold guy."
She also thanked her fellow nominees, noting she was the sole representative for 'Weapons' during the press circuit. Madigan concluded by thanking her daughter Lily, son-in-law Sean, and her husband Ed Harris, acknowledging his long-standing support.
Portraying Aunt Gladys in 'Weapons'
In 'Weapons,' a supernatural horror film directed by Zach Cregger, Madigan portrayed Aunt Gladys. The character's appearance, featuring heavy makeup and large glasses, was referenced by Oscars host Conan O’Brien.
A Season of Recognition
Madigan had a notable awards season, securing Best Supporting Actress nominations at the Golden Globes and BAFTA awards, and winning another actor award earlier in the month. Wunmi Mosaku was considered a strong contender in the category.
A Notable Stance: The Elia Kazan Incident
Madigan and her husband, Ed Harris, were noted in 1999 for not applauding when Elia Kazan received an honorary Oscar. Kazan had previously testified at the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952.
