Dubai International Airport Resumes Limited Services After Drone Incident

Dubai International Airport (DXB) has resumed limited flight services following a drone incident on Monday that caused a temporary suspension of operations for over seven hours. The incident, which led to a fire at a nearby fuel tank, prompted emergency responses and flight cancellations. The resumption of limited services occurred after 10:00 AM local time.

This event unfolded amidst broader regional security developments, including a temporary closure of UAE airspace announced by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on Tuesday morning as a precautionary measure.

Incident at Dubai International Airport

On Monday, operations at Dubai's main international airport were halted after a drone incident resulted in a fire at a fuel tank adjacent to the airport's Royal Air Wing. Aircraft were directed to circle outside the airport while emergency teams addressed the situation.

Dubai's media office confirmed on X that the fire was contained and no injuries were reported.

The suspension of operations lasted for over seven hours. State-owned carrier Emirates announced the expected resumption of a limited flight schedule after 10:00 AM local time. Several flights were canceled as a consequence of the disruption.

This suspension marked the longest operational halt at Dubai Airport since it reinstated flights via "safe air corridors" three days into an ongoing Iran conflict. Due to damage at Dubai International Airport's 'fuel farm,' some long-haul flights departing on Tuesday night made fuel stops at Dubai World Central Airport.

Broader Airspace Restrictions and Security Context

Approximately 24 hours after the Monday drone incident at Dubai International Airport, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in the United Arab Emirates announced a temporary closure of the country's airspace to civilian flights in the early hours of Tuesday, March 17.

The GCAA characterized this as an "exceptional precautionary measure" in response to "rapidly evolving regional security developments."

Initial reports of the GCAA announcement, made at 3:14 AM on March 17, were followed by observations that flights continued to operate at Abu Dhabi and Dubai International Airports by 4:00 AM local time. By 10:00 AM Dubai time, it was understood that the airspace closure was temporary.

This measure was reportedly taken to address a specific threat, potentially posed by Iranian projectiles, though official confirmation was not immediately provided. Authorities indicated that airspace could be restricted again with short notice if the security situation changes.

The GCAA's statement emphasized that the airspace closure was based on a "comprehensive assessment of security and operational risks" and was coordinated with national and international authorities, prioritizing airspace safety and UAE sovereignty.

Prior Incidents and Economic Impact

Dubai International Airport has reportedly experienced multiple security incidents in the preceding two weeks. These include:

  • A drone explosion near Terminal 3 on March 7, which injured four individuals.
  • An incident on March 1 where drone debris impacted Terminal 3's roof, causing injuries and damage.
  • On Monday night, UAE armed forces intercepted another salvo of Iranian drones.

Earlier, during a period following an incident, foreign carriers reportedly faced bans on flying to the UAE due to safety concerns, while Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Air Arabia continued operations.

A total airspace closure in the UAE would have significant economic implications. The aviation sector contributes an estimated 27% to Dubai's GDP, amounting to an annual economic contribution of US $37.3 billion. Each hour of grounded flights is estimated to result in a loss of $4.25 million for the Dubai economy.

Local authorities urged the public to rely on official government sources for information amidst the evolving situation.
