British Airways has announced the introduction of daily flights between London and Melbourne, Australia, via Kuala Lumpur. This new service will commence in January 2027, marking the airline's return to Melbourne after an absence of over two decades.
Service Details
The new route will connect London Heathrow (LHR) to Melbourne (MEL), with a crucial stop in Kuala Lumpur (KUL). British Airways plans to deploy a four-class Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 aircraft for this service.
Passengers will have a choice of First, Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins, catering to diverse travel needs.
The inaugural flight from London, designated BA33, is scheduled to depart on January 9, 2027, and will arrive in Melbourne on January 11, 2027. For the return journey, flight BA34 will depart Melbourne on January 11, 2027.
Ticket sales for the new route commenced on Tuesday night. Round-trip fares from Melbourne to London are available starting from $1960.
Return to Melbourne
This reintroduction signifies a significant return for British Airways to the Australian city of Melbourne, which it last served in March 2006. The airline currently maintains an existing daily service to Sydney.
Strategic Context and Route Adjustments
British Airways stated that the decision to launch the new London-Melbourne route, alongside increased services to Bangkok and Singapore, is a strategic response to current market conditions.
The airline aims to meet rising demand resulting from the evolving situation in the Middle East.
In alignment with these changes, British Airways has concurrently reduced flights to several destinations in the Middle East, including Amman, Bahrain, Dubai, Doha, and Tel Aviv.
