QUT Student Sentenced After Fatal Kelvin Grove Road Collision
A woman has been sentenced following a fatal collision with a Queensland University of Technology (QUT) PhD student in Brisbane. The incident occurred in 2024 on Kelvin Grove Road when the driver reportedly failed to observe a red traffic light for seven seconds.

The collision took place on Kelvin Grove Road in 2024. The driver's vehicle struck the victim after reportedly running a red traffic light for seven seconds, leading to a fatal outcome.
Parties Involved
The victim was Arjun Srinivas, a PhD candidate at QUT. The driver was Airlia Paige Holman, who was 20 years old at the time and also a QUT student.
Court Proceedings
Ms. Holman pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death. Crown prosecutor Stephanie Gallagher stated that Ms. Holman, traveling southbound, struck Mr. Srinivas while he was crossing the road. Ms. Holman remained at the scene and informed emergency services that she believed the light was green.
Mr. Srinivas sustained severe head injuries. His life support was regrettably withdrawn approximately eight days later by his family.
Defense barrister Samuel Bain stated that on the day of the incident, Ms. Holman had recently moved and was experiencing challenging living circumstances. Mr. Bain reported Ms. Holman's remorse and noted her academic background.
Judge Rosengren highlighted that Ms. Holman acknowledged the light was red for seven seconds and attributed her failure to a lack of full attention.
Sentencing
Airlia Paige Holman received a 2.5-year prison sentence, suspended after serving four months, and a two-year driving disqualification.
Judge Jennifer Rosengren stated the maximum penalty for the offense at the time was 10 years imprisonment and a minimum one-year license disqualification.
Ms. Holman received a 2.5-year prison sentence, which will be suspended after she serves four months. She was also disqualified from driving for two years.
Victim's Background and Road Safety Commentary
Arjun Srinivas joined QUT in 2022 as a PhD student, researching the Australian Search Experience Project and YouTube's role in news content curation. QUT confirmed plans to publish Mr. Srinivas’ research posthumously.
Daniel Angus, director of QUT’s Digital Media Research Centre, commented on potential structural issues related to road safety. He noted the 60km/h speed limit on Kelvin Grove Road compared to reduced limits on some other major roads.
