BMW Confirms M3 Touring Race Car for Nürburgring 24h

BMW has confirmed the development of an M3 Touring race car designed to compete in this year’s 24 Hours of Nürburgring.

The concept for this high-performance wagon's racing debut originated from an unexpected source: an April Fool's joke. Following an overwhelmingly positive public response to the prank last year, the automaker made the strategic decision to transition the concept into a production vehicle specifically intended for racing.

Project Genesis: From Joke to Race Car

The journey of the M3 Touring race car began with a playful deception. The concept was initially unveiled as an April Fool's joke revealed by BMW last year. This prank, however, garnered significant public enthusiasm.

Following an overwhelmingly positive public response, the automaker decided to transition the concept into a production vehicle intended for racing.

This strong reaction was the catalyst that moved the project from a humorous idea to a serious racing endeavor.

Under the Hood: Technical Specifications

The M3 Touring race car is engineered for formidable performance on the track, drawing heavily from proven racing technology.

The M3 Touring race car utilizes the same technical specifications and components as the BMW M4 GT3 EVO.

Powering this racing wagon is BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. This robust powerplant is capable of generating up to 590 horsepower.

For its exterior, the vehicle features a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body shell, meticulously designed to replicate the distinctive form of the M3 Touring wagon.

Road to the Ring: Development and Race Plans

BMW began drafting a race version of the M3 Touring upon the road car's debut in 2022. Interestingly, planning for the April Fool's joke, including professional renderings, commenced two years prior to its April 1, 2025, reveal.

In August, the project received the green light from BMW, a direct response to the strong public reaction. Development of the race car then promptly began in September. The car is anticipated to be race-ready within eight months, with vehicle validation having commenced last month.

The M3 Touring race car is slated to compete in the SPX class at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in May, a different classification than the M4 GT3.

Following its challenging debut race, BMW intends to showcase the racing wagon on tour, allowing enthusiasts to see the unique machine up close.
