Colin Furze Unveils Magnetic Hoverboard Prototype

YouTuber Colin Furze has developed a prototype hoverboard utilizing magnetic suspension. This project follows his previous magnetic-suspension bike.

The Magnetic Principle

The hoverboard's suspension is achieved through the repulsive force of large neodymium magnets. Two magnets are mounted on a base plate connected to skateboard trucks, and two are positioned on the wooden deck that the rider stands on.

Overcoming Instability and Design Evolution

Magnetic repulsion creates an inherently unstable equilibrium, necessitating a reduction in the deck's degrees of freedom. Initial tests used a pair of rods and linear bearings to restrict movement to the z-axis, allowing vertical hover. However, these pins transmitted vibrations from the ground to the deck.

Recognizing the limitations for performing tricks, Furze adapted the design for a longboard, which is typically used for transportation. The longboard prototype also incorporates large magnets. After several iterations to improve stability and ride quality, including a tensegrity-inspired attempt, the design incorporated a pair of loosely-fitted pins relocated to the board's rear.

From the rider's perspective, the device appears and reportedly feels like a hoverboard.

Unique Freedom of Movement

Alternative hover technologies, such as eddy currents over copper or superconductors over a magnetic track, would limit movement to specific locations. Furze's design offers a degree of lateral freedom in movement.
