Garmin Launches WhatsApp Integration for Smartwatches

Garmin has rolled out a new WhatsApp integration, bringing the ability for users to compose and reply to WhatsApp messages directly from their wrists. This significant functionality is delivered through a new Connect IQ app, making advanced communication accessible on more recent Garmin watch models.

Garmin's latest innovation allows users to stay connected by reading and responding to WhatsApp messages directly from their smartwatches, enhancing convenience and accessibility.

This new feature positions Garmin smartwatches as even more comprehensive communication tools, offering a seamless messaging experience without needing to pull out a phone for every interaction.

Compatible Devices

The integration is primarily designed for Garmin watches released in 2025 or 2026. As of the launch, a specific list of models supports this new functionality:

• D2 Air X15
• Enduro 3
• Fenix 8 Series
• Fenix 8 Pro Series
• Fenix E
• Forerunner 570
• Forerunner 970
• Tactix 8 Series
• Venu 4 Series
• Venu X1
• Vivoactive 6

Expansion to older Garmin devices is not anticipated for this particular integration.

Installation and Setup

Getting started with the WhatsApp app is straightforward. Users can install the app via the Connect IQ application on their phone. Once installed on the watch, the app requires a crucial linking process: a QR code scan, which must be performed twice for confirmation, securely connecting your WhatsApp account.

Usage and Features

Upon opening the WhatsApp app on the watch, users will immediately see their 10 most recent conversation contacts, with each displaying the 10 most recent messages. Conversations can be easily opened to read messages in full, allowing users to both reply to existing chats and compose new messages.

Reply options are flexible, offering a mini-keyboard for detailed responses or a selection of six quick replies for rapid communication. For incoming messages, new WhatsApp messages on the watch will initially appear as standard notifications, with a convenient option to open them within the dedicated WhatsApp app for full viewing and replying.

Key Limitations

While powerful, the integration does come with a few notable limitations at launch:

• Media Support: The integration currently only supports text messages. Images, stickers, and GIFs are not supported.
• LTE Connectivity: The feature does not function over LTE on Garmin Fenix 8 Pro series watches. A phone connection to the watch is always required for operation.
