Mr. Beck's bail application was denied, with the court hearing details regarding the victim's extensive injuries and the need for significant forensic analysis.

Body Discovery and Arrest

The body of an elderly man, reportedly in his 80s, was discovered on Monday morning off the Henty Highway at Jung, a town near Horsham in north-west Victoria.

Police arrested Robert Beck in Horsham on Monday evening. The arrest followed a two-and-a-half-hour stand-off during which Mr. Beck was reportedly armed with a knife. Charges were laid overnight, and Mr. Beck appeared in court on Wednesday morning.

Court Proceedings

During the administrative hearing at Horsham Magistrates' Court, Mr. Beck's bail application was opposed by the police prosecutor and subsequently denied by Magistrate Timothy Hoare.

The police prosecutor informed the court that evidence suggests the deceased individual sustained 24 injuries. The prosecutor also indicated that significant forensic analysis is required on various materials, including Mr. Beck's phone. A request for 12 weeks for this analysis was made, though Magistrate Hoare directed that the work should be completed within eight weeks.

Magistrate's Directions and Defence Submission

Magistrate Timothy Hoare issued several specific directions to the police prosecution:

  • Arrange for CCTV and other footage to be made compatible with the court system.
  • Lodge requests for digital forensic analysis.
  • Seek a DNA case summary within seven days.

Defence lawyer Gemma Ross-McGlynn informed the court that Mr. Beck has diagnoses of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Ms. McGlynn stated that Mr. Beck requires an assessment for medication while in custody.

The case is scheduled to be heard next in the Supreme Court in July.
