Mr. Flower Fantastic Unveils "The Orchid Show: Concrete Jungle" at NYBG

Mr. Flower Fantastic, the anonymous floral artist, has installed his new exhibition, “The Orchid Show: Mr. Flower Fantastic's Concrete Jungle,” at the New York Botanical Garden. Known for high-profile collaborations with figures such as Serena Williams and Michael Jordan, and brands like Nike and Louis Vuitton, the artist maintains his anonymity.

The artist typically conceals his identity with a gas mask and gloves due to an allergy to flowers and a desire to focus solely on his art.

The Exhibition: Finding Beauty in the Urban Landscape

The exhibition invites the public to observe the city by finding beauty in common structures. This immersive experience reimagines everyday urban elements through the lens of floral art.

Installations within the show feature:

  • A matte black dumpster overflowing with white moth orchids and English ivy.
  • A manhole cover encircled by purple, yellow, and pink orchids.
  • A car wash replica with a taxi constructed from synthetic and real carnations.

Mr. Flower Fantastic has stated that the carnation is his favorite flower, often overlooked despite its versatility and vibrant possibilities.

From Graffiti to Floral Art

The artist's journey into floral art began early. His interest in flowers started while gardening with his mother in Jamaica, Queens. Before his current medium, Mr. Flower Fantastic was a graffiti artist, and one of his original tags is recreated in the exhibition using flowers.

His professional career in floral art gained significant momentum after a 2018 collaboration with fashion designer Virgil Abloh for Serena Williams' Nike "Queen" Air Max 97 launch. This pivotal moment helped establish his unique artistic voice.

Show Details and Immersive Experience

The creation of "The Orchid Show: Mr. Flower Fantastic's Concrete Jungle" was a substantial effort, involving approximately 85 people, most from the New York Botanical Garden. The entire show is designed to be an immersive experience for visitors.

Mr. Flower Fantastic has described the exhibition as a "portal" or "time capsule", representing key moments where his creativity developed and blossomed.

The exhibition is open through April 26, offering a unique perspective on urban beauty and the power of floral artistry.
