NASCAR Indefinitely Suspends Driver Daniel Dye, Mandates Sensitivity Training

NASCAR has indefinitely suspended driver Daniel Dye, 22, and mandated sensitivity training for his potential reinstatement. Kaulig Racing also issued an indefinite suspension for Dye, effective immediately, after becoming aware of comments he made on social media.

Dye was competing full-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with Kaulig Racing's Ram Truck program and had made appearances in the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series. At the time of the suspension, he was ranked 13th in points in the Craftsman Truck Series.

Incident Details

The incident occurred during a live stream on Whatnot, an online marketplace. Dye was discussing meeting IndyCar driver David Malukas for promotional material when he recounted asking Malukas about racing on ovals.

Dye then used a homophobic voice to mock Malukas's response.

NASCAR O'Reilly Series driver Brent Crews and his stepfather, Matt Lankford, were also present during the stream. Crews left the live stream during the comments and received no disciplinary action.

David Malukas has not released a public statement regarding the situation.

Daniel Dye's Statement

Daniel Dye issued an apology acknowledging his "careless comments" and "poorly chosen words" that upset people.

"I admit I did not think enough before speaking and did not intend to harm anyone, but I understand that intent does not negate impact," Dye stated in his apology.

Key points from his statement include:

  • Apology to David Malukas and anyone offended.
  • Recognition that his actions do not reflect how he wants to represent himself or his feelings towards the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Admission of not thinking enough before speaking and not intending harm, while understanding that intention does not negate impact.
  • Commitment to learning from the situation, becoming more aware and respectful, and educating himself on the impact of his decisions.
  • Acknowledgement of his platform and responsibility to use it better.
