DNI Gabbard Questioned Over Conflicting Iran Nuclear Statements
US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was questioned by Democratic senators today regarding a significant discrepancy. The inquiry centered on differing claims from the White House and the intelligence community concerning Iran's nuclear enrichment capabilities.
Conflicting Accounts on Iran's Nuclear Program
The core of the questioning revolved around two distinct statements made by Director Gabbard concerning the status of Iran's nuclear activities.
In her pre-written opening statement submitted to the Senate Intelligence Committee, Director Gabbard presented a definitive assessment:
"As a result of Operation Midnight Hammer, Iran’s nuclear enrichment program was obliterated. There has been no efforts since then to try to rebuild their enrichment capability."
However, during her subsequent oral statement to the committee, a different narrative emerged regarding Iran's past activities and compliance. She conveyed that:
"prior to Operation Epic Fury, the IC assesses Iran was trying to recover from the severe damage to its nuclear infrastructure sustained during the 12 Day War and continued to refuse to comply with its nuclear obligations with the IAEA, refusing them access to key facilities."
Explanation for Statement Change
Democratic senators immediately sought clarification on the divergent information presented in the two statements.
When pressed about the differing accounts, Director Gabbard explained that she had altered her statement with the intention of saving time during the committee hearing.
