Major Film Releases Set for December 18
Warner Bros.' and Legendary's "Dune: Part Three" and Disney and Marvel's "Avengers: Doomsday" are both officially scheduled for release on December 18. This simultaneous release has generated discussion within the film exhibition industry.
Industry Concerns Mount Over Shared Audiences and Premium Screens
Theater chain representatives have expressed concerns about the potential impact of two major fantasy hero films opening on the same day.
Unlike previous co-releases such as "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," these two films share significant audience overlap, particularly among male demographics. "Dune: Part Two" (2024) saw 68% male viewership on its opening weekend, while "Avengers: Endgame" (2019) had a 60% male and 40% female split.
A key issue is the allocation of Premium Large Format (PLF) screens, including IMAX. "Dune" has secured IMAX exclusivity for three weeks. This arrangement has led to concerns among observers regarding "Avengers: Doomsday" not having IMAX screens available. The two films will share other non-IMAX PLF screens.
Studios Hold Firm: Release Strategy and Exhibitor Views
Disney and Marvel are reportedly maintaining their December 18 release date despite "Dune"'s IMAX exclusivity. Industry insiders note that a substantial number of regular auditoriums will be available for both films. Some exhibitors view this as a beneficial situation, providing two major draws for the Christmas holiday period.
The week before Christmas is a highly sought-after release window, historically accommodating multiple tentpole films due to increased moviegoing during the holidays.
However, the current theatrical landscape, marked by struggles in recent years, makes this double release appear less optimal to some.
Box Office Battleground: Background and Predictions
"Dune" initially claimed the December 18 date in 2024. The next "Avengers" film, previously titled "The Kang Dynasty," moved its release date twice, including creative changes such as the Russo Bros. joining the "Doomsday" and "Secret Wars" projects and shifting away from Jonathan Majors' Kang.
Both films are expected to generate significant box office revenue.
While the Marvel brand's recent performance has been evaluated against its past successes, "Avengers: Doomsday," featuring popular franchise actors, is anticipated to achieve higher box office returns.
For context, "Dune: Part Two" earned $750 million globally, while "Avengers: Endgame" grossed $2.8 billion.
Robert Downey Jr., a star in "Doomsday," publicly acknowledged the release date conflict. He humorously coined the term "Dunesday" in acknowledgment of the conflict.
