Professor Ralph Martins AO has been appointed the inaugural Chair of Alzheimer's Research at The University of Western Australia (UWA).

This appointment is part of a $6 million partnership established by UWA, Alzheimer's Research Australia, and Lion's Alzheimer's Foundation, with the objective of advancing research in the prevention, treatment, and care of Alzheimer's disease.

Appointment Details

The endowed chair, based at UWA, is intended to improve the lives of individuals affected by Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's is recognized as the most common form of dementia and a leading cause of death in Australia. The initiative is structured to drive research advancements across various aspects of the disease, from early detection to therapeutic interventions.

Professor Martins' Expertise and Research

Professor Martins brings over four decades of experience to the role, having made contributions to the global understanding of Alzheimer's disease. His work, alongside his research team, has focused on developing non-invasive and cost-effective methods for the early diagnosis of pre-clinical Alzheimer's disease.

A key area of his research involves the identification of Alzheimer's-related blood-based proteins, which holds potential for a low-cost blood test for early detection.

He is an internationally recognized figure in Alzheimer's disease research, known for advancing understanding of the disease's causes, early detection mechanisms, and potential treatments.

University's Perspective and Goals

UWA Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Anna Nowak stated that Professor Martins' appointment aligns with the University's mission to address major health challenges and drive innovation and impact in medical research. The university views this role as a step towards strengthening its involvement in dementia research and contributing to global health.

Chair's Key Responsibilities

In his capacity as Chair, Professor Martins is expected to:

  • Mentor future researchers in the field.
  • Expand collaborative research networks.
  • Advance strategies for the prevention, early detection, and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
