Kirby Air Ride: Road Trip Mode Development Insights

Director Masahiro Sakurai shared insights into the development of Kirby Air Ride's "Road Trip" mode. This mode was not part of the initial design but was incorporated to provide additional single-player content, aiming to extend player engagement beyond the main City Trial and Air Ride modes.

Design Evolution

Sakurai considered various concepts for long-term gameplay, including a series of challenges, sequential rival attacks, or event-based tasks. The approach eventually evolved into a "journey" framework, allowing players to select from three branching paths and explore different themed worlds, forming the core design for Road Trip.

Story Concept: Focus on Machines

The story for Road Trip centers on the machines within the Kirby universe rather than the playable Riders. Key machines such as Zorah, Nova, and Gigantes were central to the narrative.

Zorah was depicted as a being formed accidentally in space by accumulating surrounding materials, without malicious intent. Similarly, Galactic Nova operates by fulfilling external requests. The narrative implies an external malicious force is responsible for incidents within the mode, seeking to dominate or annihilate Planet Popstar.

Route Character Selection

Route characters appearing during Road Trip were developed by the design team, focusing on unpredictability and how different characters interact with obstacles. The selection aimed to connect stages, such as using a rainbow bridge for sky stages. Characters were deliberately chosen from a wide range of Kirby series titles to create a diverse and "festival-like" atmosphere, balancing representation across generations.
