Girl Sustains Life-Altering Injuries in Mexico Pool Drain Incident

View source

A family from Pittsburgh, US, experienced a significant incident during a holiday in Mexico when their three-year-old daughter, Paloma, sustained severe injuries in a resort's baby pool.

Horrific Incident in Resort Pool

On the final day of their trip, the grate cover on a drain in the shallow pool reportedly became loose, and the drain's suction trapped Paloma. Her father, Adam Quatrini, attempted to pull her free but was unable due to the pressure.

The pool's shut-off mechanism, located underneath, took approximately two minutes to activate.

Devastating Injuries Discovered

Initial medical assessment at a local surgery indicated a possible anal prolapse. However, during an operation, it was discovered that Paloma's small intestine was no longer present in her body.

A report for CBS Pittsburgh described the injury as the drain "eviscerated Paloma, ripping her small intestine’s from her body," an injury typically considered life-ending.

Lifesaving Operations and Long-Term Care

Paloma was subsequently transported to UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, where pediatric transplant surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Bond performed seven operations over two and a half months. Dr. Bond explained that a very small segment of her bowel remained, with the small bowel being absent and the colon joined to the remaining segment.

As a result of the injury, Paloma now requires daily connection to a machine overnight to receive essential nutrients. This involves a permanent catheter-like fixture that delivers nutrients directly into her circulatory system via a route to her heart.

Previous Incidents and Parental Warning

The incident is not isolated. Similar accidents have occurred, including the death of six-year-old Abigail Taylor in Minnesota in 2008 due to a comparable injury.

Paloma's parents, Carolina Velez and Adam Quatrini, have urged other carers to inspect pool drain covers and be aware of emergency shut-off locations to prevent similar incidents.
