iOS 26.4 RC Brings Payment Flexibility to Family Sharing

The iOS 26.4 Release Candidate (RC) includes a change to Family Sharing, allowing adult members to use their own payment methods for purchases. This addresses a prior limitation where all purchases within a Family Sharing group, when purchase sharing was enabled, were charged to the family organizer's credit card.

Since its introduction in June 2014, Family Sharing has expanded with features like Apple Cash Family and Apple Credit Card Family. However, the billing model, which defaulted to the family organizer's payment method, remained consistent until the iOS 26.4 RC update.

A New Era for Purchase Sharing

The specific enhancement in the iOS 26.4 RC release notes states:

Purchase Sharing lets adult members in Family Sharing groups use their own payment method when making purchases, without relying on the family organizer.

Apple has also updated its support document, "How to share apps and purchases with Family Sharing on your iPhone or iPad." The updated wording in the "How Purchase Sharing works" section now reads: "When the family organizer turns on Purchase Sharing and the members enable the feature for their devices, they get access to each other’s shared content. The family organizer pays for everyone’s purchases unless they turn off Purchase Sharing or other adult family members use their own payment method to make purchases."
