Carson Wentz Re-Signs with Minnesota Vikings, Extends Tenure Through 2026
The Minnesota Vikings announced on Thursday that quarterback Carson Wentz has agreed to a one-year deal, extending his tenure with the team into the 2026 season. This agreement marks Wentz's second consecutive year with the Vikings.
Wentz is expected to compete for a position within the Vikings' quarterback room.
That room also includes recent free agent acquisition Kyler Murray and 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy. Reports indicated that Wentz had received interest from other teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, but he opted to remain with Minnesota.
Last Season's Performance
Last season, the 33-year-old Wentz started five games for the Vikings in relief of an injured J.J. McCarthy. During these games, Minnesota posted a 2-3 record. Wentz continued to play despite a shoulder dislocation before undergoing season-ending surgery. He completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 1,216 yards, throwing six touchdowns and five interceptions.
A Streak of Consistency
This signing signifies the first time Wentz will play for the same team in consecutive seasons since his final year with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020. Since then, he has played for the Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Rams, and Kansas City Chiefs, starting at least one game for each franchise before joining the Vikings.
Career Overview
A former No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Wentz has participated in 103 career games, starting 99 of them, and holds a career record of 49-49-1. His career statistics include a 62.8 percent completion rate, 23,626 passing yards, 159 touchdowns, and 72 interceptions.
