UnitingCare Submits Plans for New Elders Village in Cairns
Culturally Informed Care Facility to Replace Current Site
UnitingCare has submitted a development application for its new Pinangba Hollingsworth Elders Village, located in Westcourt, Cairns. This development aims to replace the current Hartley Street facility with a new purpose-built aged care home.
The project, supported by a government capital grant, will establish a 42-bed village designed to provide care and connection for First Nations elders. The facility will incorporate culturally informed meeting places, artwork, and landscaping. It will also include shared dining, living, and kitchen areas, designed to resemble a domestic house in scale.
UnitingCare stated its objective is to create an environment where elders feel comfortable, connected, and respected, with care that honors their culture and identity, supporting their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Andrea Fox, General Manager of Pinangba, noted that the redevelopment holds significant meaning for the community. She stated that the new village aims to continue the spirit of the previous facility while offering modern, culturally grounded care.
The relocation will move the village from its current site at 269-277 Hartley Street in Portsmith to 72 Tills Street in Westcourt. UnitingCare will collaborate with residents, families, staff, First Nations leaders, and adjacent organizations to facilitate a smooth transition.
