BTS Returns: Hamish Hamilton Directs Global Netflix Comeback from Seoul
Hamish Hamilton, a partner and director/executive producer at Done+Dusted, is preparing to direct the live Netflix event "BTS The Comeback Live: Arirang." This highly anticipated event follows his recent directorial successes, including roles for the Grammys, the Super Bowl halftime show, and the Oscars.
The Director's Vision for a Global Phenomenon
The hour-long event will mark the return of K-pop group BTS, who are embarking on a global tour following a hiatus and the release of their first studio album in six years. Done+Dusted partner and executive producer Guy Carrington noted the palpable excitement building in Seoul as stages for the event were constructed.
"BTS The Comeback Live: Arirang" Details
"BTS The Comeback Live" will take place at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul at 8 p.m. Korean time. It will air live globally on Netflix, including 7 a.m. ET and 4 a.m. PT.
Due to its outdoor nature, the production team and BTS cannot conduct on-stage rehearsals with the band, which Hamilton acknowledged as a significant challenge.
Creative Collaboration and Challenges
Hamilton and Carrington met with the BTS members—Jin, j-hope, RM, V, Jimin, Jung Kook, and SUGA—in Seoul to discuss the show. The band, having watched Hamilton's direction of Bad Bunny's Super Bowl LX halftime show, demonstrated a clear understanding of the intricate production process. The team had access to the BTS members for workshopping key moments of the show, ensuring a collaborative and authentic performance.
A Monumental Return: Album and Documentary
The BTS members are returning after fulfilling South Korea's mandatory military service requirements, during which they also released solo work. Their fifth studio album, "Arirang," is scheduled for release the day before the performance.
Netflix will also premiere the documentary "BTS: The Return," detailing the making of "Arirang," on March 27.
Gwanghwamun Square: A Stage of National Pride
Done+Dusted North America CEO Melanie Fletcher stated that BTS was determined to host the show at Gwanghwamun Square despite logistical challenges. Seoul city supported the decision, recognizing the event's significance on a global stage.
The stage design will feature a large LED square cube that transforms throughout the show, intended to highlight the majestic Gyeongbokgung Palace in the background. This visual integration promises a stunning backdrop for the comeback.
Crafting the Spectacle
The show is designed to represent the group's personal journey, with each track presented distinctly. It will include choreographed numbers, dynamic moments, and intimate segments showcasing the band's individual personalities.
Fletcher indicated that the event leverages Done+Dusted's expertise in both event production and live broadcasting, emphasizing the high stakes and the team's commitment. Crew members reportedly expressed national pride, working extensive hours for what they consider a significant cultural moment for Korea.
