Nintendo has announced plans to release a version of the Switch 2 in the European Union that will feature a user-replaceable battery, in compliance with an EU regulation taking effect in 2027. The company has not confirmed similar models for other regions.
Regulatory Compliance
The EU Battery Regulation, enacted in 2023, mandates that portable batteries in consumer products must be easily removable or replaceable by users. The regulation becomes effective February 18, 2027.
Nintendo stated on its website that it is "implementing measures to comply with these requirements by preparing versions of products to meet the Regulation."
Product Specifications
The compliant Switch 2 variant will feature a lithium-ion battery in both the console and its Joy-Con controllers that can be safely removed. Nintendo has not detailed the specific engineering changes required to achieve this.
Current Switch 2 battery replacement involves a multi-step process, according to iFixit. The new models will have model numbers beginning with "BEE," and packaging will include the additional code "OSM." These consoles will be sold as separate products for regulatory purposes.
It remains unclear whether the revised model will include user-replaceable batteries in the Pro Controller and Joy-Cons, which also carry the BEE moniker.
Region-Specific Availability
According to a report from Japanese outlet Nikkei, the updated model is primarily intended for the European market. The report indicated that products sold in Japan and potentially the United States will continue to be sold with existing specifications. However, Nikkei suggested that similar policies could be implemented in those regions if consumer awareness of right-to-repair issues increases.
Nintendo did not respond to a request for comment regarding availability in other regions.
Pricing and Release
No release date or price has been announced for the new variant. The company did not mention plans for a similar update to the original Switch (product code HAC).
Nintendo released the Switch 2 in 2025, featuring a larger screen, larger base storage, and improved performance. In May 2024, Nintendo raised the Switch 2 price in the EU from €470 to €500, citing rising memory costs and market changes.
