Kentucky Secures Thrilling Overtime Victory Against Santa Clara
Otega Oweh's buzzer-beater forced overtime, and his subsequent tiebreaking free throws led No. 7 seed Kentucky to an 89-84 victory over No. 10 seed Santa Clara in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
Regulation Drama Culminates in Midcourt Miracle
The game’s most dramatic moment unfolded at the very end of regulation. With only 2.4 seconds remaining, Allen Graves of Santa Clara made a clutch 3-pointer, giving the Broncos a 73-70 lead and putting them on the brink of an upset.
However, Kentucky had one last possession. Oweh received the inbound pass, quickly advanced the ball, and, as time expired, sank a shot from near midcourt, tying the game and sending it into overtime. Neither team utilized a timeout in the final seconds of regulation before Oweh's heroic shot.
Overtime Sealing the Deal
In the extra period, Oweh continued his decisive play, making two free throws with 1:12 left to secure Kentucky's lead. Brandon Garrison delivered critical defensive plays in the final minute of overtime, blocking two 3-point attempts by Sash Gavalyugov.
Garrison's first block was immediately followed by a dunk, increasing Kentucky’s lead to 83-79. His second block resulted in additional free throws for Kentucky, helping solidify the victory.
Oweh Leads Wildcat Charge with Record-Setting Performance
Otega Oweh had an exceptional outing, finishing with a career-high 35 points. He also contributed significantly with eight rebounds and seven assists for Kentucky (22-13).
Oweh's dominant performance saw him establish a new school record for points scored in a player’s first two seasons, surpassing the mark held by Bill Spivey from the 1951 national championship season. Other key contributors for Kentucky included Mouhamed Dioubate with 17 points and Denzel Aberdeen, who added 16 points.
Santa Clara's Valiant Effort
Christian Hammond led Santa Clara (26-9) with 20 points in their quest for an upset. Allen Graves, who hit the crucial late-regulation 3-pointer, contributed 17 points for the Broncos.
Santa Clara, seeking its first tournament victory since 1996, mounted a strong challenge but ultimately fell short.
Tournament Path Ahead
Kentucky will now advance to the second round of the Midwest Region. They are set to face either No. 2 seed Iowa State or No. 15 seed Tennessee State. This marked Kentucky's 63rd appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Game Flow Highlights
The game was a back-and-forth contest throughout. Graves gave Santa Clara a 70-68 lead with a putback shot at 1:33 remaining in regulation. Following an Oweh miss, Graves missed another attempt, and Oweh secured the ball, leading to a Kentucky timeout. Oweh then tied the game with a layup with 9.9 seconds left, setting the stage for the dramatic final seconds.
In the second half, Kentucky initiated a 13-4 scoring run with consecutive 3-pointers from Collin Chandler and Aberdeen. Aberdeen's second 3-pointer gave Kentucky a 51-44 lead with 12:21 remaining, a lead that Gavalyugov immediately countered with a 3-pointer. Following a 3-pointer from Mahi, Gavalyugov scored a jumper and another 3-pointer, giving Santa Clara a 59-55 lead with 7:56 left, showcasing the game's constant momentum shifts.
Both teams faced challenges with long-range shooting in the first half, each making 4 of 15 attempts from beyond the arc. Santa Clara held a narrow 31-29 lead at halftime, capping the half with a 10-3 run that included seven points from Mahi.
