Chicago Firefighter Dies Battling Blaze; Suspect Charged with Murder and Arson

Chicago Fire Department (CFD) firefighter Michael “Mickey” Altman, 32, died on Tuesday from injuries sustained while battling a fire in Rogers Park on Monday. Subsequently, Sheaves Slate, 27, has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of arson in connection with Altman's death.

The charges against Sheaves Slate, 27, represent a significant step toward justice for the Altman family and the Chicago Fire Department following the tragic death of Michael "Mickey" Altman, 32.

Incident Details

The fire originated around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, at an apartment building located at 1757 W. North Shore Ave. Fire crews successfully extinguished the blaze by approximately 1:15 p.m.

During a search of the building, Altman, who was assigned to Truck 47, fell through a floor into a basement room that was actively on fire. He sustained fatal injuries from the fall and exposure to the active blaze.

Charges Filed

Sheaves Slate, 27, has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of arson. These severe charges are directly linked to the death of Michael Altman.

CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt stated that the charges represent a step toward justice for the Altman family and the Chicago Fire Department, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the department's commitment to supporting Altman's loved ones.

A Legacy of Service

Michael Altman was a fourth-generation member of the Chicago Fire Department, continuing a proud family tradition. He had joined the department approximately two years prior to the tragic incident. His grandfather, Edward P. Altman, notably served as the Fire Department commissioner from 1996 to 1999.

Michael Altman is survived by his wife, Nora, a young son, and another child who is expected. The family had recently relocated to Mount Greenwood last year.

Community Mourns and Supports

The community has rallied in support of Altman's family. An online fundraiser established for Altman’s family had raised over $500,000 as of Friday morning, demonstrating widespread compassion and solidarity.

On Friday, a funeral procession for Altman traveled along Western Avenue and 103rd Street. Residents and students from St. John Fisher Elementary School, Queen of Martyrs Elementary School, and Mount Greenwood Elementary School were present along the route, paying their respects.

Visitation for Michael Altman is scheduled from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel, located at 7740 S. Western Ave. The funeral service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on March 27 at the same location.
