Van Steenis Defends PFL Middleweight Title with Knockout Victory Over Edwards
Costello van Steenis defeated Fabian Edwards by knockout in the third round to retain his PFL middleweight title in Madrid. This victory marks Van Steenis's first title defense and his second win against Edwards, having previously defeated him in 2020.
Edwards, 32, was attempting to win a world title following prior defeats in 2023 and 2024. During the fight, Edwards consistently opted for grappling despite appearing to hold an advantage in striking.
Van Steenis stopped Edwards with a series of elbows while defending a takedown against the cage.
This loss follows another recent defeat for Edwards' brother, Leon, who was knocked out by Carlos Prates in November.
Champion's Comments
Van Steenis commented on Edwards' potential, noting his surprise at Edwards' wrestling approach, contrasting it with their previous encounter.
Edwards "could have been champion and could be champion in the future, but not by fighting me."
He added, "He is one of the best fighters in the world and so am I. It takes two people to make a great fight. Fabian can beat anybody in the world, it was just my lucky night tonight."
