Watts Mural Replaced: Dolores Huerta Now Featured Over Cesar Chavez
A prominent mural in Watts, Los Angeles, depicting farmworker movement leader Cesar Chavez, has been replaced with an image of civil rights icon Dolores Huerta. The change was made following sexual assault allegations against Chavez.
The Updated Artwork
Muralist "Misteralek" finalized the updated artwork on Friday. The mural, situated at the Watts Century Latino Organization, was initially created in 2021 and previously featured Chavez alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Allegations Drive the Change
Misteralek indicated that he decided to modify the mural after learning about new allegations concerning Chavez. Dolores Huerta stated earlier in the week that she was among the individuals who alleged sexual assault by Chavez.
Organization's Stance
Autumn Ybarra, executive director of the Watts Century Latino Organization, commented that the movement and struggle are broader than any single person, and the shift to portraying Dolores Huerta was a simple decision.
Misteralek expressed his conviction that this alteration was appropriate and hoped the community would appreciate the refreshed mural.
