WordPress.com Introduces AI Agents
WordPress.com has announced a significant step forward with the integration of AI agents on its platform. This development allows AI agents to draft, edit, and publish content on customer websites. Beyond content creation, these agents can also manage comments, update metadata, and organize content using tags and categories.
Website owners will control these functionalities through an interface that accepts natural language commands.
This strategic move aims to lower the barrier for website setup and maintenance, potentially increasing the amount of machine-generated content across the web.
Broad Reach and Pre-existing AI Integration
WordPress, as a publishing platform, boasts a formidable reach, powering over 43% of all internet websites. While WordPress.com represents a segment of this total, its network alone experiences 20 billion page views and 409 million unique visitors monthly.
This new AI capability builds upon existing support, following the introduction of Model Context Protocol (MCP) support on WordPress.com in the previous fall. MCP enables applications to provide context to large language models (LLMs), allowing AI assistants to connect with the platform for site visibility. This includes access to content, settings, and analytics, all through various AI applications like Claude Desktop or ChatGPT.
Expanded Actions for AI-Powered Site Management
With the latest update, AI agents are no longer limited to merely reading site content. They can now perform a much wider range of actions, significantly enhancing site management:
- Creating posts, landing pages, and About pages.
- Making structural changes to websites.
- Approving, replying to, and cleaning up comments.
- Creating, renaming, and restructuring categories and tags across the site.
- Fixing alt text, captions, and titles to enhance site SEO.
All changes made by AI agents are meticulously recorded in the site’s Activity Log, providing full transparency to website owners.
Ensuring User Oversight and Activation
Customers are provided with flexible options for content creation. They can author drafts for AI agents to publish, tag, and categorize with a meta description. Alternatively, users can simply instruct the AI agent to create a post or page by describing the desired content.
The company states that all changes require user approval, and AI-written posts are saved as drafts by default.
AI agents are also designed to analyze the site’s theme and design, including colors, fonts, spacing, and block patterns, before generating any content. To activate these advanced features, WordPress.com customers can visit wordpress.com/mcp, toggle on their desired capabilities, and connect their preferred MCP-enabled AI client.
Wider Industry Landscape
The integration of AI agents by WordPress.com contributes to ongoing industry discussions regarding the nature and source of web content. Other prominent companies, such as Meta with Moltbook and Anthropic with its blog experiments, have also been actively exploring AI-authored content, typically under human oversight.
