Nissan to Introduce e-Power Hybrid System to U.S. Market

Nissan Motor Company is set to introduce its innovative "e-Power" series hybrid system to the U.S. market later this year. This new technology will first debut in an updated version of the Nissan Rogue compact SUV.

Understanding Nissan's e-Power Technology

The e-Power system distinguishes itself from traditional hybrids by using a gas-powered engine solely as a generator. This generator supplies electricity to the vehicle's electric motors, which are the sole propulsion source for the wheels. Crucially, the gas engine does not directly drive the wheels. This setup allows for an electrically driven experience, while still utilizing gasoline for refueling.

Unlike extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), the e-Power system features a smaller battery and does not require plug-in charging, emphasizing convenience for consumers.

Strategic Launch Amid Shifting Market Trends

This strategic launch aligns with current market conditions, particularly rising gas prices and a projected increase in hybrid vehicle sales across the U.S.

According to S&P Global Mobility, hybrid vehicles are forecasted to constitute 18.4% of new vehicle sales in the U.S. this year, a notable increase from 12.6% last year. In contrast, the same forecast indicates a slight decrease in pure electric vehicle sales, projected at 7.1% this year, down from 8% last year.

"This powertrain operates as an electrically driven vehicle that refuels with gasoline and does not require external charging," states Kurt Rosolowsky, a Nissan North America vehicle evaluation and test engineer, summarizing the essence of the e-Power system.
