Deadly Hospital Strike in Sudan Claims Dozens

A strike on the Al Daein Teaching Hospital in Sudan's East Darfur region last week resulted in the deaths of at least 64 people, including 13 children, and injured 89 others, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The incident, which occurred last Friday, has drawn international condemnation.

WHO head Tedros Ghebreyesus stated on X that the strike rendered the Al Daein Teaching Hospital non-functional.

Sudan's Deepening Civil War

Sudan has been experiencing a devastating civil war since April 2023. The conflict stems from an ongoing power struggle between the national military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Conflicting Claims of Responsibility

The RSF was quick to attribute blame for the hospital strike to the military. However, the army has denied responsibility for the attack. Two military officials, who requested anonymity, indicated that the strike's intended target was a nearby police station, not the hospital facility.

Escalating Humanitarian Crisis

The broader conflict in Sudan has taken a severe toll on the civilian population. United Nations figures suggest the conflict has claimed over 40,000 lives, a number aid groups believe is a significant undercount.

The impact on healthcare facilities has been particularly stark. The WHO has reported more than 2,000 deaths from attacks on medical facilities since the war began.

Ghebreyesus urged for de-escalation following the latest attack, stating, "Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted."
