Familiar Faces Clash as Purdue Meets Miami

The upcoming college basketball game between Purdue and Miami will feature a familiar face in Miami forward Malik Reneau, who previously played against Purdue multiple times while at Indiana. Reneau transferred to Miami following a coaching change at Indiana. Miami also includes guard Tre Donaldson, who played for Michigan last season and faced Purdue twice.

The Familiarity Factor: An Acknowledged Advantage

Players acknowledge that familiarity with opponents can be an advantage.

Reneau commented that while knowing opponents' capabilities helps, the game ultimately comes down to competition and effort for 40 minutes, including tough finishes around the rim.

Purdue's Kaufman-Renn also noted that familiarity with players like Reneau and Donaldson provides an edge in a tournament setting. Kaufman-Renn has performed well in the postseason, averaging 17.2 points on 68.4% shooting with 10 assists and three turnovers over five games. He believes that most players' baseline game remains consistent, even if aspects evolve.

Malik Reneau's Evolved Game: A New Threat

Reneau, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound player, has adapted his style since his time at Indiana, where he played both power forward and center. He is now a formidable post-up threat, averaging 19 points on 55% shooting. He has also developed into a capable floor spacer, shooting 36% from three-point range on about two attempts per game. This new versatility might lead him to shoot more against Purdue's larger frontcourt.

A Different Approach: Perimeter Movement and Defensive Grit

Reneau stated that Purdue is familiar with his post-up game from his Indiana tenure. However, in Miami's system, he is more involved in perimeter movement, setting ball screens, and playing in the pocket, which Purdue has not seen as much.

He anticipates a different style of play compared to his previous isolation-heavy approach.

Defensively, Reneau expects to contend with Purdue's top front-line scorer by holding his ground and preventing easy angles, forcing the opponent to shoot over him.
