Syracuse Reportedly Nearing Deal to Hire Gerry McNamara as Head Coach

Syracuse University is reportedly working to hire Gerry McNamara, a former Syracuse player and national champion, as its next head coach. McNamara is currently the head coach at Siena.

Coaching Career

Before being considered for the Syracuse head coaching position, McNamara served as Siena's head coach for the 2024-25 season, accumulating a 37-30 record. During his tenure at Siena, the team notably led No. 1 overall seed Duke by 11 points at halftime in a recent NCAA Tournament game before eventually losing by six points.

"I'm crushed for them because they played well enough to win. They did."

"For me to take this job, to take it over, the goal was always to play on this stage, and I’m really, really proud of how they represented our school, our community, the alumni."

From 2009 to 2024, McNamara served as a graduate assistant and assistant head coach under Jim Boeheim and Adrian ‘Red’ Autry at Syracuse.

Playing Career

McNamara played for Syracuse from 2002 to 2006. He was a member of the 2003 national championship team alongside Carmelo Anthony. In the 2003 national championship game against Kansas, McNamara scored 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, all from beyond the arc. He averaged 13.3 points and 4.4 assists during that season.

Coaching Succession

McNamara would replace Adrian Autry, who was dismissed by Syracuse in early March. Autry's three seasons with the Orange resulted in a 49-48 record, and the team did not make the NCAA Tournament during his tenure.
