Christine Boutique to Close After 27 Years on Collins Street
The renowned Melbourne luxury fashion boutique, Christine, located on Collins Street, is scheduled to close its doors on May 2, concluding 27 years of operation. Owner Christine Barro, 76, announced her decision to cease bricks-and-mortar retail activities to pursue new projects.
Christine boutique was notable for introducing international designers such as Prada and Fendi to the Australian market, and also served as the sole local stockist for several smaller international brands.
A Legacy of International Fashion
The boutique made a significant mark on the Australian fashion scene by introducing major international designers such as Prada and Fendi. Beyond these prominent names, Christine also acted as the exclusive local stockist for a variety of smaller, unique international brands, enriching Melbourne's style landscape.
Christine Barro's Distinguished Career
Barro's extensive career in the fashion industry began with roles at David Jones in Sydney, followed by a period at Georges in Melbourne, where she became a respected buyer. She ultimately opened her own boutique, Christine, on Flinders Lane in 1999, following the closure of Georges.
Concerns Amidst a Changing Retail Environment
The closure of Christine follows a trend of other independent fashion boutiques in Melbourne ceasing operations, including Miss Louise last year and Le Louvre earlier this year. Barro has openly voiced concerns about the evolving retail landscape and the increasing dominance of large luxury brand corporations, which she believes prioritize marketing over craftsmanship.
Caroline Ralphsmith, chief executive of the Melbourne Fashion Festival, expressed regret over Christine's closure. She highlighted the loss of the boutique's unique individuality and the distinctive retail experience it offered.
Future Projects
Despite closing her physical retail space, Barro intends to remain active in the fashion industry. She plans to continue her collaboration with designer Martin Grant through a series of exclusive trunk shows.
