Pope Leo XIV Advances Six Toward Sainthood

Pope Leo XIV has authorized the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to promulgate decrees advancing six individuals toward sainthood. This announcement was made after the Pope received Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery.

The decrees recognized the spiritual journeys of these individuals in two distinct ways. The offering of life of one individual was recognized, and the heroic virtues of five others were acknowledged.

Individuals Advanced Toward Sainthood

The six individuals whose causes for sainthood have progressed are:

  • Servant of God Ludovico Altieri: Bishop of Albano and Cardinal. Born July 17, 1805, in Rome, Italy; died August 11, 1867, in Albano Laziale. His offering of life was recognized.
  • Servant of God Edward Joseph Flanagan: Diocesan priest and Founder of Boys Town. Born July 13, 1886, in Ballymoe, Ireland; died May 15, 1948, in Berlin, Germany.
  • Servant of God Henri Caffarel: Diocesan priest and Founder of the Association “Teams of Our Lady” and the Secular Institute “Fraternity of Our Lady of the Resurrection.” Born July 30, 1903, in Lyon, France; died September 18, 1996, in Beauvais.
  • Servant of God Stanisława Samulowska (born Barbara): Professed religious of the Company of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. Born January 30, 1865, in Woryty, present-day Poland; died December 6, 1950, in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
  • Servant of God María of Bethlehem of the Heart of Jesus Romero Algarín (born María Dolores): Professed religious of the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Divine Heart. Born October 7, 1916, in Seville, Spain; died November 12, 1977, in Sanlúcar la Mayor.
  • Servant of God Giuseppe Castagnetti: Lay faithful and father of a family. Born March 15, 1909, in Montebaranzone, Italy; died June 22, 1965.

Individuals whose heroic virtues are recognized receive the title Venerable Servant of God, or Venerable.
