Socceroos Stars Speak: Robertson on Commitment, Ryan on World Cup and Fatherhood

Socceroos midfielder Alex Robertson has addressed his national team eligibility, while captain Mat Ryan discussed upcoming World Cup preparations and personal life updates.

Alex Robertson's National Team Commitment

Robertson, a 22-year-old midfielder for Cardiff City, made his Socceroos debut in 2023. An issue regarding his eligibility arose last year, which led to a period of non-selection for the national side. During this time, with his international caps having come in friendly matches, he was eligible to represent England, Peru, and Scotland.

The paperwork issue was resolved, and Robertson was recalled to the squad late last year after a two-year absence. Born in Scotland, raised in Sydney, and having represented England at youth level, Robertson stated that his commitment to Australia was always unwavering.

He dismissed speculation about playing for other countries as 'paper talk.'

Robertson is currently aiming to secure a place in the World Cup squad. He did not receive game time in the previous camp, making the upcoming matches against Cameroon and CuraƧao crucial opportunities to demonstrate his capabilities.

Mat Ryan's World Cup Prospects and Fatherhood

Socceroos captain Mat Ryan is expected to participate in the upcoming World Cup, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Ryan, who plays for Levante in Spain's La Liga, acknowledges competition for the goalkeeper position from Paul Izzo and Patrick Beach.

Ryan stated that competition within the squad is beneficial, fostering a stronger team and bringing out the best in players. He emphasized that the team environment, as fostered by coach Tony Popovic, prioritizes merit over hierarchy based on seniority or experience.

At 33 years old, Ryan aims for his fourth World Cup appearance. He also discussed embracing fatherhood to his six-month-old son, Preston.

Ryan noted that fatherhood provides a new perspective, recognizing something more important than sport, which he believes helps him perform on a personal level.
