Tejano Icon Bobby Pulido Enters Texas Congressional Race

Former Tejano music icon Bobby Pulido has announced his candidacy for office in Texas' 15th congressional district. Pulido, a Democrat, declared his challenge against incumbent Rep. Monica De La Cruz in September, a move that coincided with his fifth Latin Grammy nomination.

The early stages of the campaign have seen De La Cruz criticize Pulido's music background. Pulido, in turn, highlighted the cultural importance of quinceañeras in South Texas, emphasizing their role in bringing communities together. This exchange led to numerous invitations for Pulido to appear at quinceañeras across the district.

Pulido's campaign focuses heavily on his deep connection to South Texas culture, advocating for affordability and expanded access to health care for residents.

He has stated that both the Democratic and Republican parties have prioritized corporate interests, asserting his intent to focus squarely on issues directly impacting voters.

From Music Royalty to Political Aspirant

Pulido's musical journey spans over three decades, rooted in a rich family legacy. He followed in the footsteps of his grandfather, Mario Montes of Los Donneños, and his father, Roberto Pulido, both prominent figures in Tejano music. Initially, Pulido pursued a degree in political science before signing with EMI Latin in 1995, which marked his full-time commitment to music.

His recording career began in the wake of Selena Quintanilla's tragic death, a period that significantly impacted the Tejano genre. Pulido's debut album, "Desvelado," quickly achieved platinum status and produced a hit title track that resonated widely. His talent was recognized with Male Entertainer of the Year awards at the Tejano Music Awards for three consecutive years, from 1998 to 2000. He continued to release multiple albums, earning Latin Grammy and Grammy nominations, and dedicated efforts to mastering the Spanish language throughout his career.

In 2023, Pulido performed with Grupo Frontera, acknowledging and engaging with the evolving regional Mexican music scene.

A New Chapter: Retirement from Music and Political Ambition

A pivotal moment came in November of last year when Pulido won a Latin Grammy for Best Tejano Album for "Una Tuya Una Mia (Por La Puerta Grande)," using his acceptance speech to announce his retirement from music.

Pulido explained his decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to assess his legacy and address current concerns about democracy.

"My decision to enter politics was driven by a desire to assess my legacy and address current concerns about democracy," Pulido stated, signaling a profound shift in his public service.
