Australia Boosts Penalties Against Fuel Sector Misconduct

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has announced a significant increase in penalties aimed at misconduct within Australia's fuel sector. The stated purpose of this action is to protect Australian motorists from entities engaged in exploitative practices.

The action seeks to protect consumers and hold petrol suppliers and retailers accountable amidst global economic uncertainty.

Legislation introduced on Wednesday will double existing penalties for false or misleading conduct and cartel behavior. This change raises the maximum penalty to $100 million per offense.

These increased penalties are not exclusively limited to service stations and fuel suppliers, indicating a broader application for such conduct across the sector. This initiative comes as petrol prices have recently reached record highs.
