"The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past" Announced with Stephen Colbert and Peter Jackson

Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced a new Lord of the Rings film, "The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past." The project is being developed by Stephen Colbert and his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, with Peter Jackson producing alongside Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. This new film draws inspiration from previously unadapted chapters of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring" and is set 14 years after the events of the original trilogy. It is scheduled for release following "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum," which is set for 2027.

Warner Bros. Unveils "Shadows of the Past"

The announcement for "The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past" was made on Tuesday night by Warner Bros. Pictures, in collaboration with New Line Cinema. The reveal came via the studio's official social media channels and included a video featuring filmmaker Peter Jackson, who introduced Stephen Colbert as a collaborator for the project.

Deep Dive into "Shadows of the Past" Project

The film, currently with a working title, marks Stephen Colbert's initial foray into major blockbuster development. Colbert and his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, are developing the project. Peter Jackson, alongside longtime franchise producers Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, will serve as producers. Colbert, McGee, Jackson, and Boyens have been collaboratively developing and co-writing the script for the past two years, with Colbert having initially approached Jackson with the concept approximately two years prior.

Narrative and Setting

The narrative is set 14 years after the departure of Frodo Baggins. The plot will follow hobbits Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took as they retrace the initial stages of their original adventure. Concurrently, Sam's daughter, Elanor, uncovers a long-held secret concerning why the War of the Ring nearly failed before it began.

Tolkien's Unadapted Chapters Inspire Plot

Colbert stated that the film's inspiration comes from six chapters (III through VIII) of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring" that were not included in Peter Jackson's 2001 film adaptation.

Specifically, these chapters range from "Three is Company" through "Fog on the Barrow-Downs." The film is expected to adapt elements featuring characters like Tom Bombadil and the Barrow-wights. Colbert and McGee developed a framing device for this story, with an aim for the film to be faithful to both Tolkien's original books and the established film series.

The Creative Team Behind the New Film

  • Stephen Colbert: Known for his extensive interest in J.R.R. Tolkien's works, Colbert previously had a cameo in Jackson’s 2013 film, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," and directed the 2019 short film "Darrylgorn," set in Middle-earth. He has referenced his upcoming availability following the conclusion of his tenure as host of "The Late Show."
  • Peter McGee: Colbert's son, screenwriter Peter McGee, contributed to developing the story's framework with Colbert. His writing credits include "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker," "Outer Banks," "The Righteous Gemstones," and "Blue Bloods."
  • Peter Jackson: Celebrated for adapting "The Lord of the Rings" saga into a film trilogy (2001-2003), which received 17 Academy Awards, and "The Hobbit" into a three-part film series (2012-2014). He will serve as a producer and collaborator on the script for "Shadows of the Past."
  • Philippa Boyens: Has a history of collaborating with Peter Jackson, having co-written "The Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" trilogies with Fran Walsh, as well as the 2005 film "King Kong." She is involved in co-writing and producing this new project.
  • Fran Walsh: A longtime franchise producer, co-wrote the "Lord of the Rings" and "Hobbit" trilogies with Boyens and Jackson, and will also serve as a producer.

The Expanding Lord of the Rings Cinematic Universe

"The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past" is scheduled for release after "The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum." This preceding film, directed by and starring Andy Serkis, is slated for release on December 17, 2027.

Peter Jackson provided an update on "The Hunt for Gollum," indicating that its development is progressing positively and that script work is on track.

"The Hunt for Gollum" will focus on Aragorn's quest to capture Gollum, taking place between the events of "The Hobbit" and "The Fellowship of the Ring."
