Albanese Slams Coalition's Trade Stance, Cites Joyce's 'Absent' Influence

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has sharply criticized the Coalition and One Nation over their evolving stance on trade, specifically referencing former Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce. Albanese declared that the Coalition, a party historically supportive of free trade, has "gone backwards" on the issue.

He further asserted that the Coalition was significantly influenced by Joyce, who was not present in the chamber during the initial remarks. According to Albanese, this influence was driving the Coalition to adopt trade policies similar to those advocated by One Nation.

Coincidentally, as Albanese concluded his critical statement, Barnaby Joyce re-entered the chamber. Joyce gestured towards the Prime Minister and clarified that he had been monitoring the proceedings from a television located just outside the doors.

Seizing on Joyce's return and his explanation, Albanese immediately remarked that Joyce's influence was so pervasive it was evident even when he was physically absent.

"For that tail to wag the dog, Mr Speaker, [Joyce] doesn't even have to be in the room."
