Dr. Dominic Chow Receives Prestigious JACC Young Author Achievement Award

Dr. Dominic Chow, an electrophysiologist at Northern Health, has been recognized with the 2025 JACC William W. Parmley Young Author Achievement Award. This prestigious award acknowledges research demonstrating scientific rigor, originality, and clinical relevance. JACC is the medical journal of the American College of Cardiology.

Harlan M. Krumholz, Editor-in-Chief of JACC, commended Dr. Chow for his achievement and lauded the research environment at Northern Health, which supports high-calibre scholarship in cardiovascular science.

Pioneering Research in Physiological Pacing

Professor William van Gaal, Director of Cardiology at Northern Health, described Dr. Chow as a developing figure in cardiology. Dr. Chow conducted the first randomized controlled trial globally in a new form of physiological pacing, an area where Northern Health is leading in this specialized pacemaker procedure.

His significant contribution to cardiovascular medicine was specifically recognized for his manuscript, “Clinical Outcomes of Conduction System Pacing vs Right Ventricular Septal Pacing in Atrioventricular Block: The CSPACE Randomized Controlled Trial,” which was published in JACC in 2025.

"Conduction system pacing represents a future direction for pacemaker therapy, with the potential to reduce the risk of pacing-induced heart failure."

Shaping Future Pacemaker Practices

Dr. Chow indicated that this novel pacing technique is expected to influence future pacemaker prescription practices globally. Northern Health patients have been benefiting from this advanced technique since its local pioneering by A/Prof. Uwais Mohamed around 2017.

Collaboration and Recognition

Dr. Chow credited his mentors and colleagues for facilitating his achievements, highlighting the collaborative environment at Northern Health as central to the CSPACE trial's success. He noted that robust teamwork within the department enabled the journey through challenges like COVID-related recruitment, all while maintaining stringent scientific standards. Dr. Chow described his experience at Northern Health as particularly rewarding, attributing this to dependable colleagues and supportive mentors.

Formal recognition for Dr. Chow will take place at the JACC Journals Reception during the American College of Cardiology Scientific Session in New Orleans.

Prahlad Ho, Chief Medical Officer and Chair of the Research Executive Committee, acknowledged Dr. Chow's scientific excellence and clinical leadership, underscoring the international impact of his groundbreaking work.
