2026 FIFA World Cup: A Historic Tournament Takes Shape

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, features 48 teams for the first time. The qualification process concluded with the final six spots being determined through UEFA and inter-confederation playoffs. The final four European qualification spots were decided on April 1, 2026 (AEDT). The results determined the composition of multiple World Cup groups.

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina secured a World Cup berth by defeating Italy 4-1 in a penalty shootout in Zenica, following a 1-1 draw after extra time. This marks Italy's third consecutive World Cup absence. Haris Tabakovic scored the equalizer for Bosnia in the 79th minute. Italy's Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante missed penalties in the shootout. Bosnia will join Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland in Group B.

  • Türkiye qualified for the first time since 2002, defeating Kosovo 1-0 in Pristina. Kerem Aktürkoğlu scored the decisive goal in the 53rd minute. Türkiye will join Australia, the United States, and Paraguay in Group D.

  • Sweden secured a World Cup berth by defeating Poland 3-2 in Solna. Viktor Gyökeres scored the winning goal two minutes from time. Anthony Elanga and Gustaf Lagerbielke also scored for Sweden. Sweden will compete in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia.

  • Czechia qualified for the first time since 2006, defeating Denmark 3-1 in a penalty shootout in Prague following a 2-2 draw after extra time. Czechia will play in Group A with Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea.

Inter-Confederation Playoffs

Two final qualification spots were decided at a FIFA play-off tournament hosted in Mexico.

  • Iraq, coached by former Socceroos manager Graham Arnold, defeated Bolivia to advance. This will be Iraq's first World Cup appearance since 1986. Iraq will join France, Norway, and Senegal in Group I.

  • DR Congo will compete in Group K alongside Colombia, Portugal, and Uzbekistan after securing qualification.

Argentina's Campaign

Argentina began its title defense in Group J with a 3-0 victory over Algeria in Kansas City on June 16. Lionel Messi scored a hat trick, his first at a World Cup, tying Miroslav Klose's record of 16 goals in men's World Cup history. The match was Messi's 200th international appearance for Argentina. Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane, wearing a protective face mask after a jaw fracture, started in goal.

Argentina then defeated Austria 2-0 in Arlington, Texas, on June 22. Messi scored both goals, bringing his World Cup career total to 18 and surpassing Klose's previous record of 16 goals to become the all-time leading scorer in men's World Cup history. Messi missed a penalty in the 9th minute of the match. The victory secured Argentina's advancement to the Round of 32.
