Over a dozen staff members from the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, have departed the organization to join Advancing American Freedom (AAF), a group founded by former Vice President Mike Pence.
Background on Departures
These staff changes occur amid internal discussions within the Heritage Foundation and the broader conservative movement regarding individuals who have promoted ideas such as antisemitism. Tensions arose within Heritage after its president, Kevin Roberts, issued a video in October defending Tucker Carlson's interview with Nick Fuentes, a self-identified white nationalist known for praising Adolf Hitler. Roberts later apologized for the video following internal controversy. Separately, a task force focused on fighting antisemitism recently disaffiliated from Heritage due to related concerns.
Advancing American Freedom Expansion
On Monday, Advancing American Freedom (AAF) announced the hiring of these individuals, including leaders from Heritage Foundation's legal, economic, and data departments. Former Vice President Mike Pence stated that the new hires "bring a wealth of experience, a love of country, and a deep commitment to the Constitution and Conservative Movement that will further the cause of liberty."
AAF President Tim Chapman informed NPR that AAF secured $13 million of a $15 million fundraising target within two weeks to cover salaries for the new staff over three years. This expansion increases AAF's personnel from 18 to over 30 employees.
AAF's Strategic Focus
Chapman stated that AAF is strengthening its research team to address what it identifies as a void within the contemporary conservative movement. AAF intends to advocate for established conservative principles, including low taxation, robust national defense, and limited regulation. Chapman characterized the current period as a struggle within the Republican Party and the broader right to establish future direction. He articulated that a movement focused on political personalities is now recognizing the finite nature of individual leadership, prompting questions about the movement's post-leadership identity.
Heritage Foundation's Response and Influence
In response, Andy Olivastro, Heritage Foundation Chief Advancement Officer, described some departing staff as "disloyal" and asserted that the departures "clear the way for a stronger, more focused team." The Heritage Foundation maintained a significant role during the Trump administration, notably through its Project 2025 initiative, which detailed conservative policy objectives and plans, many of which were subsequently implemented.
