Roosters Face Defensive Crisis After Decade-Worst Start

The Sydney Roosters have experienced a challenging defensive start to the 2026 NRL Premiership season, conceding a total of 100 points and 17 tries in their first three games. This performance marks their worst defensive start in a decade.

Early Season Defensive Struggles

In their opening round, the Roosters allowed 42 points against the Warriors. They conceded 18 points in a subsequent victory over the Rabbitohs and then 40 points against Penrith.

With 100 points given up, the Roosters currently have the second-highest points conceded in the league this season, trailing only the Eels (104 points).

Scrutiny on Defensive Efforts and Structural Issues

Daly Cherry-Evans' defensive efforts have drawn scrutiny, particularly concerning the Roosters' right side, which opposing teams like the Warriors and Penrith exploited.

Roosters player James Tedesco indicated that structural issues contributed to the defensive problems and emphasized the necessity for an improved team attitude towards stopping tries.

"Structural issues contributed to the defensive problems and emphasized the necessity for an improved team attitude towards stopping tries."

Coach Robinson Addresses Defensive Identity

Coach Trent Robinson commented on the team's defensive identity, stating, "We have built our house here on defence and we really value that." He added that the current defensive situation "doesn't feel good and we need to make it feel good."

"We have built our house here on defence and we really value that. We have had a focus on that and all we can do is improve that tomorrow night."

Looming Challenge: Manly's Potent Left Edge

In their upcoming match against Manly, the Roosters will face a strong offensive presence on Manly's left side. Left centre Tolu Koula has averaged 169 meters per game and recorded seven tackle breaks across two games this season, scoring 12 tries in his last 11 games at Brookvale. Left winger Jason Saab boasts an impressive record of 73 tries in 108 career appearances.
