IRGC Navy Head Reportedly Killed in Strike Near Strait of Hormuz

Israeli defense officials and Defense Minister Israel Katz have reported the death of Alireza Tangsiri, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' (IRGC) Navy, in a strike near the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. Israeli sources have attributed the strike to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and claim several of Tangsiri's senior naval aides were also killed. Iranian authorities have not confirmed these reports.

The Reported Incident

A strike reportedly occurred on Thursday at approximately 3 a.m. local time in Bandar Abbas, an area adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz. Israeli defense sources have stated that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out the strike.

Israeli Claims

Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Alireza Tangsiri, the head of the IRGC Navy, was killed in the strike. Katz identified Tangsiri as the official directly responsible for actions related to mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz to shipping. Israeli defense sources also reported that several of Tangsiri's senior naval aides died in the same incident.

Minister Katz described the event as significant for American partners, indicating that it reflected the IDF's role in efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Alireza Tangsiri's Background and Statements

Alireza Tangsiri had served as the head of the IRGC Navy since August 2018. In the weeks prior to the reported strike, he had made public statements concerning Iran’s activities in the Gulf, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. He had also issued threats of retaliation against US facilities in the region, advising civilians and workers to maintain distance.

Tangsiri was quoted as stating, "Our list of targets is updated. Oil facilities associated with America are now on par with American bases and will come under fire with full force."

Iranian Response

As of the current reporting, Iranian state media and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have not issued any comments or confirmation regarding the reports of Alireza Tangsiri's death.
